Ravens look complex. All those dark feathers and sharp angles can make any beginner second-guess themselves. I felt the same way when I first tried.

But here is the thing: drawing a raven is easier than it looks when you follow the right steps.

In this guide, I will walk you through everything from the basic head shape to the final feather details.

No art degree needed. No fancy tools either. Just clear steps, honest tips, and a drawing you will actually finish.

Let's get started.

Understanding Raven Structure Before You Draw

Detailed outline of a raven's anatomy, providing guidance for artists before starting their drawings.

Before you put pencil to paper, take a moment to study how a raven is built. A raven has a large, rounded body with strong wings that fold neatly against its sides.

The head is medium-sized with a bold, curved beak that points slightly downward. The tail is long and pointed, not fan-shaped like many other birds.

The legs are thin but sturdy, ending in sharp claws. Understanding these proportions helps you draw with more confidence.

When you know what a raven actually looks like, your lines will feel more natural and your drawing will look more accurate from the start.

Materials You'll Need

Overview of materials needed, highlighting key tools and supplies for the task at hand.

Getting the right tools makes a big difference. Here is what I use:

  • Pencil (HB or 2B): Start light so you can fix mistakes easily.
  • Eraser: A good eraser keeps your sketch clean as you go.
  • Drawing paper: Plain white paper or a sketchbook both work well.
  • Fine liner or ink pen: Use this for the final outline once your sketch is done.
  • Ruler (optional): Helpful for keeping proportions balanced in early stages.

Start simple. You do not need expensive tools to draw well.

Step-by-Step: How to Draw a Raven

Follow these steps one at a time and you will have a clean raven sketch before you know it.

Step 1: Draw the Head and Beak

A simple raven head with a pointed beak and a small round eye.

Start by drawing the raven's head with a small curved line like a soft hook shape. Add a pointed beak at the front, making it slightly long and sharp with a gentle downward curve.

Draw a small round eye near the top of the head to give expression.

Keep the lines smooth and simple because this is the starting point of the bird. This step creates the basic face structure of the raven.

Step 2: Sketch the Neck and Chest

A curved neck and rounded chest connected smoothly to the raven's head outline.

From the lower part of the head, draw a smooth curved line downward to form the neck and chest area.

Make the chest slightly rounded so the bird looks natural and balanced. This part should connect softly with the head without sharp corners.

Keep the curve gentle because ravens have soft feathered necks. This step helps shape the front body and gives the bird a realistic posture.

Step 3: Draw the Body Shape

A rounded oval-shaped raven body connected neatly to the neck and chest.

Continue from the chest and draw a large rounded curve to create the main body. The body should look soft, full, and slightly oval-shaped.

Connect the lower body back toward the upper back area. Make sure the body is not too thin because ravens have strong feathered bodies.

This step forms the main structure and makes the raven look complete before adding wings and tail.

Step 4: Add the Wings

Folded wings drawn with curved feather lines along the side of the raven's body.

Now draw the folded wings using long curved lines starting from the upper back and extending downward.

Add one more curved line inside the wing for feather detail. Keep the wings neat and slightly narrow so they fit naturally on the body.

The wing should rest along the side of the body. This step makes the bird look more realistic and gives shape to its flying feathers.

Step 5: Draw the Tail

A pointed narrow tail attached neatly to the back of the raven's body.

At the back of the body, draw a pointed tail using two slanted lines meeting at the end. Keep the tail narrow and slightly sharp because ravens have long tail feathers.

Make sure it connects smoothly with the wing and body. The tail should look balanced and not too large.

This step adds the back detail and improves the bird's full side view appearance.

Step 6: Draw the Legs

Two thin raven legs with small claws drawn under the rounded body.

Under the body, draw two thin legs using straight lines. Add small claws at the bottom by making short pointed lines for the feet.

Keep the legs simple and balanced under the bird so it looks like it is standing properly.

Ravens have thin but strong legs, so do not make them too thick. This step helps complete the standing position of the raven.

Step 7: Add Feather Details

Small feather details added around the raven's neck, wings, and tail.

Draw small feather lines around the neck, wings, and tail to make the raven look more natural. These short curved lines help show texture and softness.

Keep the feather details light and simple so the drawing stays neat. Do not overcrowd the body with too many lines.

This step gives the raven a more realistic appearance and improves the overall final look.

Step 8: Final Outline and Finish

A completed raven drawing with beak, eye, wings, tail, legs, and feather details.

Darken the full outline of the raven and smooth any rough edges. Make the eye clearer and sharpen the beak outline for a cleaner finish.

Check if all body parts look balanced and adjust if needed.

This final step completes the raven drawing and makes it ready for coloring, shading, or decoration. Your easy raven sketch is now fully finished.

Pro Tips for Better Raven Drawings

Small habits make a big difference. Here is what helped me improve fast.

  • Work in Layers, Not Pressure: Start light. Build the shape slowly before going darker.
  • Use Reference Images: Keep a raven photo nearby to check proportions as you draw.
  • Take Breaks to Spot Errors: Fresh eyes catch mistakes you missed while drawing.
  • Shapes First, Details Later: Get the body right before adding feathers or claws.
  • Practice the Beak Separately: Sketch it a few times on scrap paper first.

Stay consistent and small improvements add up fast.

Conclusion

Drawing a raven felt overwhelming to me the first time. But once I broke it into steps, it clicked. Now it is one of my favorite things to sketch.

Try it out and make it your own. Your first attempt does not have to be perfect. That is how every good drawing starts.
